The Iris Garden in Florence

The Iris Garden is one of the many gardens of Florence. Less famous than the Boboli and Bardini gardens, the Iris Garden is located just beside Piazzale Michelangelo and it was open to public since 1954, in order to host an international iris contest.

The decision taken by the organizers to choose Florence as the hosting city of this special event is partly due to the fact that the iris is the symbol of the city. Yes: it’s true!

Many people in Italy and even some Florentines think that the city’s emblem, a red flower on a white background, is a lily. But they couldn’t be more wrong. The famous flower is actually an iris – a fun fact to remember at your next pub quiz night!

The garden gathers together hundreds of different varieties of irises, coming from all over the world – and is only open during the month of May, when the flowers are blooming.

Those with a green thumb who are planning to visit Florence should try to come during this time where you’ll have the rare chance to admire these wonderful flowers in all their spectacular colors, with a breathtaking view on the city.
