In all major festivals of Florence the most important attraction is represented by the show of the flagwavers. It ‘s really a pleasure to see the flags moving and fluttering in the air!
The historical origin of flag-waving is definitely military.
The flag had the place of honor in all armies, representing the State, City or Municipality. The troops moved on the battlefield according to the movements (orders) of the flag. So, if the flag was lost or given to the enemy it was a synonymous of defeat and dishonor.
The flag-bearer was therefore a key figure in every battle. To better understand this, just think of the importance that the today flag-bearer of our international sport competition has got: he is the best and most representative athlete of his nation.
Luckily the flag was used in moments of celebration too. It was the best way to welcome the return of a victorious army, or during feasts, or jousting in Medieval times and later during the Renaissance. The flags came with the knights and together with drums and trumpets made the event more spectacular.
All the florentine flag movements revive historical and traditional figures: a knave or a knight of the Renaissance would surely and easily have understood and obeyed them!
According to the Florentine tradition each flag should show the coat of arms of the 16 most important Magistrature (public offices) of the 16th century Florentine Republic but since 2002 it was decided to represent only the main 8 ones.
The main city celebration with parade and flagwavers’ show is on the feast of the patron saint of Florence, St. John the Baptist, June 24.
Come and see their show, you will not be disappointed!
