The medieval history of Florence
In the 13th and 14th centuries, Florence was the scene of a long conflict between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, two factions that fought for control of the city and political supremacy. The rivalry reached its peak with bloody clashes that divided entire families and left deep scars in the city. The tower houses, tall and sturdy, became symbols of defense and power; many of them are still visible today, silent witnesses of those days of struggle.
Despite the divisions, this period marked the cultural and architectural ferment that would later
give birth to the Renaissance. Every corner of Florence still preserves the signs of this turbulent
Middle Ages, where power, faith and family pride forged the city’s destiny.
