Summer in Florence: An Explosion of Colors, Sounds, and Flavors

From the classical notes of great concerts to the more modern rhythms of music festivals, from outdoor theatrical performances to the most anticipated art exhibitions, Florence offers a packed calendar of events that will satisfy even the most demanding palates.

Music under the stars

A Florentine summer is synonymous with music. Numerous festivals and events animate the squares and gardens of the city. The Estate Fiorentina, for example, offers a rich calendar of concerts, shows, and cultural initiatives, involving internationally renowned artists and young talents. For jazz and blues lovers, Florence offers a myriad of historic venues where you can listen to good music and sip a cocktail. And for those who prefer more modern rhythms, there are plenty of opportunities to dance until dawn.

Outdoor Theater and Cinema

Theater and cinema find their natural setting outdoors, under the stars. Numerous theatrical performances animate the gardens and courtyards of historic palaces, while outdoor cinemas offer a wide selection of films for all tastes.

  • Estate Fiorentina:
     In addition to concerts and cultural events, the Estate Fiorentina often offers theatrical performances in suggestive locations such as historic gardens or city squares. Keep an eye on the official program for news.
  • Estate Fiesolana:
    Just a few kilometers from Florence, the Roman Theater of Fiesole hosts a rich program of theatrical, operatic, and musical performances every year. A unique experience in a fascinating archaeological context.

Flavors and Traditions

Summer in Florence is also an opportunity to taste typical Tuscan products. There are many festivals and popular celebrations, the sagre, dedicated to wine, olive oil and local gastronomic specialties. And for those who want to learn to cook like a true Tuscan, there are numerous cooking courses available.

  • Sagra della Bistecca (Fucecchio): From August 3 to 15, Fucecchio celebrates the queen of Florentine meat. A unique opportunity to taste a grilled steak cooked to perfection, accompanied by typical side dishes and good wine. Don’t forget to taste the other specialties such as the typical Polenta alla Barrocciaia. For those who prefer them, there will also be pizzas and ciaccini. The food stands, set up at the town’s sports field, will open in the evening from 8:00 pm.

  • Sagra del Tortello Mugellano (Borgo San Lorenzo):From August 3 to 15, Borgo San Lorenzo celebrates its tortello, a fresh pasta filled with ricotta and spinach. In the shade of the trees and the Sieve, you have the opportunity to taste the traditional tortello mugellano, proposed in various ways, Florentine steaks and mixed grills. On Sundays and holidays the festival will be open for both lunch at 12:00 and dinner at 19:00, while on other days only for dinner.

 

 

  • Sagra della Pappardella (Montespertoli): From August 23 to September 1
    The festival, which boasts of being the first in Italy in the specialty of Pappardella, will offer various specialties of the local cuisine. Among the many we mention pappardelle with hare, hare in dolceforte and hare in salmì, but also grilled meat. The food stands will remain open every evening from 19:30 and on Sundays also for lunch.
    The after-dinner will be enlivened by live music and dancing evenings.
